Pregnancy Journal: The Big Day

Excerpt from my journal dated 4/24/2008:

"So yesterday was the big day. I took a pregnancy test in the morning before work, fully expecting it to be negative...well that little stick slowly turned positive! Crazy."

"I took a second test about 45 min later. That one turned positive almost instantly. Wow."

"Well then Adam woke up and came downstairs to get ready. I frantically hid the tests trying to determine how to tell him...not when he was all sleepy and had just woken up!  Then I thought to myself,
'I should take a picture of the tests!'
I went and got my camera and brought it to the bathroom (where Adam was now in the shower).  I took a couple of pictures, but they were too dark so I turned on the flash and took one more picture. Adam saw the flash and was INSTANTLY furious.
'Did you just take a picture of me naked?!'
'Well if you didn't take a picture of me then what were you taking a picture of?!'
After trying to cool him down and put out that fire I thought there was no way I was going to tell him now that he was all mad!"

"Then I had to leave for work and I didn't want to tell him as I was running out the door. So I had all day to figure out how to tell him. I looked up tons of ideas online, but they were all so cheesy I couldn't even stand it. Finally, after much thought, I figured it out!"

"When Adam got home around 8pm I handed him a card (upstairs just outside our bedroom). The card had a picture of eggs and sausage in the shape of a smiley face on the front of it. Inside it said something like,
'You're my favorite way to start the day.'
Then I added,
'Why else would I want to take naked pictures of you in the shower?!  In light of this morning's episode I thought you might want to see the picture I took of you.'
I was standing right there as he read this holding the picture of the pregnancy tests behind my back & handed it to him. He lit up in a HUGE excited smile and said,
'No way! Really?!'
Then he gave me a huge hug and kiss. It was really quite fun!

I've got to say, it was kind of fun being the only one who knew for an entire day. I was the only person in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD who knew we were having a baby.

I am between 5-6 weeks along and will be due between December 13 and Dec 21 (my birthday!)."

Rambling on about stuff...

"Now I need to make an OB appointment. Talk about a reality check, calling to make an appointment and having to say WHY I am making the appointment.

A couple of good things about being pregnant:
1. I no longer have to paint
2. I no longer have to scoop the cat litter
A couple of bad (but totally worth it) things:
1. No sushi, lunch meat, or soft cheese
2. No wine or fun drinks"

Teeth!

We have been saying Naomi is teething for the past few months. She has been acting like she is teething off and on since she was about 3+ months old. Excessive amounts of drool, constantly chewing on her fists & toys, intermittent fussiness, etc. Yesterday Adam called me at work to announce she is cutting her first two (bottom) teeth! (Actually, he called me and I heard him saying to Naomi, "Tell Mama what you've got!" Then to me, "Guess what she has." I of course had no idea and was trying to think what possible mischief a 6 month old who doesn't crawl yet could have POSSIBLY gotten herself into!)

So, she is cutting teeth, the poor little cookie. She is a fussier than normal, more needy, wants to cuddle more (that part is really nice!) and is napping more during the day. She is also eating less and spitting up more...but overall she is doing quite well and slept really good last night (phew!).

I'll be sure to post pictures once her little toofers are out far enough. Those little buggers are SHARP by the way. OUCH!

Rewind For Just A Sec

Last time I wrote I was so excited about Naomi's "fun in the pool" that I forgot to write about a few things...specifically Father's Day. More specifically Adam's FIRST Father's Day! I gave him a book with our story in it and pictures of our life together. The story is mostly about having our first child and a brief summary of our life before that. It's written in storybook style and is meant to be a special story he can read to Naomi. I got it in the mail just in time...on Friday. I was so excited to give it to him, that I gave it to him on Saturday morning. He LOVED it! I also had purchased an "I Love My Dad, Happy Father's Day" onesie and that's what Naomi said good morning to him in. Pictures below...

In other exciting news our little girl is now sitting up!!!
And of course, falling down!
She's getting better at sitting up every day it seems...and she really enjoys it. She's growing up so fast and all of it is pretty exciting to us!

Splish Splash!

Our friend Susan gave us this really great inflatable bathtub / mini pool. I got it out a few days ago to help Naomi while she's learning to sit up. I put her in it (without any water) with some toys. That way if she falls over she won't bonk her head or anything. It's been working really well and Naomi loves it! Sunday, we put the pool in the back yard and put a little bit of water in it. Naomi was very intrigued with the water and just sort of stared at it. She played with her rubber duckies a bit. Adam and I tried to teach her how to splash, but she didn't catch on. Today, we put her in her pool in the yard again. This time we put some more water in it. She was playing with her toys and accidentally splashed when she was excitedly flailing her arms. It was on after that! She LOVED splashing and that's all she seemed to do the rest of the time she was in the pool. She splashed and splashed and splashed. Then she realized that splashing made waves that made her toys moved, so she splashed some more. Then she started kicking and creating more of a splash. It was really quite cute, and very entertaining for Adam and I!

Eye Doctor

I went for my annual eye exam yesterday. I brought Naomi with me since Adam was working and I really didn't feel like paying for childcare just so I could go read some letters on a wall ("is it clearer with 1 or 2? 2 or 3? 3 or 4? Ok, good."). Usually (and by usually I mean like ALWAYS) Naomi is really really good in her carseat for at least and hour when I am at church, running errands, etc. She just plays with her toys, watches people, etc. Not this time. Nope, 5 minutes of me being at Pearl Vision and she is fussing away like she is just not going to quit (and I forgot her pacifier! Bad mommy!).

I took her out and held her, problem solved. So there she is, sitting in my lap for all the standard eye tests, the dreaded puff of air in the eye and all the rest. Then, she sat in my lap for my entire actual eye exam. The eye doctor was almost done but still had to look at my eyes with some special magnifying gizmo. I had to lean way over (Naomi) to put my chin on the machine. There was a light on the side of this machine shining into my eye and all of the sudden the light went out. The Dr. looked up, then looked under the machine...Naomi had UNPLUGGED IT. Little goober!

Well, this is starting to sound like one of those "you had to be there" stories, but I thought it was a) slightly embarassing since I was already embarassed that I had to hold her the whole time!
b) pretty comical that my 5 month old managed to wrap her tiny little hand around a power cord and unplug it.

There Samantha! Two posts in just as many days! I hope you are proud of me (you too Amanda!).

This Next One Goes Out To My Friend Samantha...

I was talking to my friend Samantha on the phone today, and she informed me that I don't post NEARLY enough...so I'm dedicating this post to her. I'll try to do better! :-)

Let's see...Well, this past weekend, my parents were here for a visit. On Saturday, we went to two graduation parties for two of my cousins. That was fun and it was so good to see family again...it's been a while. My cousin Sarah's party was out at their house. They have a nice little farm with plenty of animals. Their place is often affectionately referred to as "Lori's Zoo" (that's my Aunt). They currently have ducks, chickens, a dwarf goat, barn cats, a horse, 3 cows, 4 dogs, and some fish too. They've also had turkeys and pigs at one time or another. Naomi met her a couple of her first farm animals.

First, she met Petey, the horse. Petey tried to bite her foot!
I'm sure he was just playin', but I wasn't about to find out...

Then she met Buddy (the 8th maybe...all their cows have been named Buddy). As a side note, when their cows someday make it to the dinner table, it is never "please pass the meat," instead, it's, "please pass Buddy." Gross? Sad? Comical? I think it is all of the above with a large emphasis on comical! ANYWAYS, I was totally side tracking there. Naomi really liked Buddy, probably because he's baby vision friendly with his high contrast black and white spots.

Thank you Grandma for a nice family photo!

Days at the farm are EXHAUSTING
(Adam's sweatshirt was good protection from the swarms of mosquitoes.)

Sunday after church we went out for lunch and then we headed to a nice little park and walked around, soaking up the fresh air and warm weather.

Just the Three of Us
Daddy's Brilliant Idea

See, it really was a good idea! These pictures turned out c.u.t.e.!

The pictures that follow are from the weekend before last. Naomi is wearing one of my dresses from when I was a baby. I LOVE this dress. LOVE IT. A lady that my mom worked with when she was pregnant with me hand smocked the top portion of the dress. Such a generous and beautiful present...and now my daughter Naomi is wearing it 27 years later. I think that's pretty neat.

Wearing Mama's Dress!

Ok, so I'll wrap up with a funny story. At least I think it's funny. Tuesday and Wednesday this week were dedicated to YARD WORK. Adam has been digging up grass and forming new gardens, we laid down lots of topsoil, and now we (well actually, I) have perennials to put in. While we do yard work, we put Naomi outside with us in her bumbo-like chair or her bouncy seat. She LOVES being outside, touching the grass, watching the birds, etc. Adam and I were in the yard, pouring out bags of topsoil, and Naomi was sitting in her bouncy seat. We stopped to talk for a second, and I heard a strange noise behind me...I turned around to see a mothers nightmare, an empty topsoil bag has blown over on top of my daughter. THERE WAS A BAG ON MY BABY'S HEAD (more like covering her WHOLE body)!!! As a looked though, I noticed the bag moving as Naomi tried to figure out what endless possibilities this fun new toy had. I quickly got Adam's attention and we had a little laugh. When I picked the bag up, you guessed it, DIRT. EVERYWHERE. Dirt on her face. Dirt in her hair. I even found dirt in her diaper later when I changed her! She was covered. I so wish I would have thought to grab my camera!!
